INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home to 110 Indianapolis 500 races and decades of open-wheel racing history. Yet one of its most recognizable traditions didn’t begin with IndyCar champions, it started with NASCAR.

Thirty years ago, Dale Jarrett won his first Brickyard 400 and kissed the yard of bricks at the start-finish line. That celebration became one of sports’ most enduring rituals, happening before Indy 500 winners adopted it.
