A SWAT standoff with a possibly armed suspect at a motel in the Midway District ended in an arrest and the reopening of the surrounding roads in the area, investigators said.
The incident began around 8:45 a.m. when officers received a report that a man was inside a room at The Bay Inn on Midway Drive near Wing Street without a reservation, said San Diego police Sgt. Saum Poorsaleh. When the hotel staff tried to remove the man, he allegedly assaulted the manager with a bottle and chair while making threats, Poorsaleh said.
When leaving, the manager said he believed he saw a gun in the room with the suspect.
Officers arrived and learned the 58-year-old man was reportedly wanted on suspicion of assault and burglary, Poorsaleh said. When they tried speaking with the man, he opened and closed the door multiple times before locking it.
Officers with the SWAT team were then called to the scene, and the motel was evacuated, investigators said. Midway Drive between East Drive and Wing Street was also shut down in both directions.
During the stand-off, officers made multiple attempts to call out to the man inside the room through their PA system and phone calls to the room, officers said.
When those failed, tear gas was deployed through the window of the motel room around 2 p.m., Poorsaleh said.
The suspect then came out of the room and was arrested without further incident.
