WEST BADEN SPRINGS, Ind. (WISH) — The assistant police chief of a small town in southern Indiana was arrested on criminal charges of official misconduct and battery on Tuesday, Indiana State Police said in a news release issued Tuesday afternoon.
Online court records on Tuesday night did not show a case yet filed against Thomas Burkhardt, 60.
State police Detective Tim Denby began investigating Burkhardt on April 22 after receiving reports of allegations from people affected. The release did not give details on what those allegations involved.
The release said a no-bond warrant was issued for Burkhardt on Tuesday. An Orange County special judge, who was not named in the release, was presented with the case, but it was unclear from the release if the judge had also issued the warrant.
Jefferson County Prosecutor David Sutter was assigned as the special prosecutor in the case, the release said.
State police said Burkhardt’s initial appearance in court should happen in the next few days in Orange Circuit Court in Paoli.
West Baden Springs, with 721 residents, is just over an hour’s drive northwest of downtown Louisville, Kentucky. The town’s West Baden Springs Hotel, with a massive 200-foot circular dome, has been called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
