Skywatchers, get ready for a ‘blood moon’ on March 3

Total Lunar Eclipse

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A total lunar eclipse is not nearly as rare as a total solar eclipse, but skywatchers will want to pay attention next week.

The moon will turn red as it sets on the western horizon on the morning of March 3. During this timeframe, the moon is moving through Earth’s shadow, which is the reason for the color change.

This total lunar eclipse will occur very low on the western horizon. An unobstructed view would be ideal for viewing. The partial part of the eclipse begins at 4:50 a.m. ET, and totality is from 6:04 a.m. to 7:02 a.m. ET.
