Oceanside residents who need to park their oversized work vehicle overnight on the street soon will be able to do that legally by paying a $150 annual fee for a permit.
The new permit is intended for people who drive a large work vehicle daily and have no room for it on their property, said Jessica Farrell, the city’s code enforcement manager. It provides an exemption to parking regulations adopted in 2021 that prohibit oversized vehicles from being parked on public streets between 2 and 6 a.m.
The 2021 rules were aimed at parked RVs and other large vehicles that were limiting neighborhood parking space, obstructing drivers’ vision and suspected of illegally dumping of sewage and trash.
Oversized vehicles are defined in the ordinance as those longer than 25 feet, wider than 7 feet and taller than 7 feet.
“The city has received consistent requests from residents seeking understandable exemptions,” Farrell said.
The annual permit program is designed to accommodate residents with vehicles up to 9.5 feet tall, states a city staff report.
“Vehicles that would fall under this category would be larger pick-up trucks with camper shells and Sprinter-type vans,” it states.
Temporary one-time, 24-hour, oversized vehicle permits are available under the 2021 ordinance for special circumstances such as new vehicles, guests, or unloading and loading. An individual is allowed up to six 24-hour permits per month.
