A fiery fatal crash involving a big rig left debris and fuel on south Interstate 805 near Interstate 8 in Mission Valley — leading to an hourslong closure of the freeway early Tuesday.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was killed in the crash, which occurred shortly before 6:05 a.m. when the vehicle hit a barrier known as a “crash impact attenuator” for unknown reasons and caught fire.

All lanes of the freeway were initially closed, but California Highway Patrol officers opened the fast lane of the freeway more than an hour after the crash.

The other lanes remained closed at 1 p.m., as was the Murray Ridge Road on-ramp, a CHP dispatcher said.
