A man was injured after falling from the foot of the Oceanside Pier to the large rocks below Sunday night, authorities said.
The man fell shortly after 9 p.m., Oceanside Fire Battalion Chief Jeremy Brandt said. Crews were on scene within four minutes. He fell onto rocks piled on the sand and was not in the water.
Firefighters had to place the man in a Stokes basket — essentially a stretcher in a hard casing — to hoist him up from the rocks, he said. Within 10 minutes, the man was off the rocks and in an ambulance.
“The crews were working very efficiently,” Brandt said.
He said the man was subsequently airlifted to a trauma center.
Police spokesperson Gina Avalos said a preliminary review of footage from a city camera “shows the male lying on top of a trash can near the Pier railing and appearing to ‘swim’ or move on it just prior to falling over the side.”
No further information was available regarding the man’s condition.
