SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WISH) — Legendary college football head coach Lou Holtz has died at the age of 89.

The University of Notre Dame Athletics Department announced the news in a press release on Wednesday afternoon.

Holtz coached the Fighting Irish for 11 seasons, helping the program capture the national championship in the 1988 season. That championship is actually the last time the Fighting Irish have won the college football national title.

Overall, Holtz won 249 games as a collegiate head coach, 100 of which were during his time (1986-96) at Notre Dame.
