Kemp will sign tax bills

(The Center Square) – Gov. Brian Kemp is slated to sign bills that cut taxes and support Georgia businesses, he said Friday.

A full list was of legislation was not available, but Senate Bill 33 and House Bill 463 have been publicly reported, Kemp spokesman Carter Chapman told The Center Square.

Lawmakers squabbled over property and income tax cuts during the 2026 General Assembly and reached compromises on both bills.

House Speaker Jon Burns said at the beginning of the session that his goal was to eliminate homestead property taxes.

Lawmakers seemed poised in the final days of the session to cap property taxes at the rate of inflation. But Senate Bill 33 only created valuation caps, requiring cities, counties and school boards to freeze property tax assessments at the rate of inflation. Cities and counties can enact a new sales tax to offset property taxes.

A Senate study committee held a series of meetings on eliminating Georgia’s income tax.
