BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — IU took down Wisconsin, 78-77, in overtime.
Lamar Wilkerson hit two free throws with less than three seconds left in overtime to give the Hoosiers the lead, which they did not give up.
Wilkerson scored the Hoosiers’ last 10 points of the game and had a team-high 25 points.
Late game execution was an issue for the Hoosiers. IU led the entire game until a John Blackwell bucket gave Wisconsin the lead with less than two minutes to go in regulation. Wisconsin went on a 10-0 run late in the second half and held a four point lead before Wilkerson made four free throws in the last minute to send the game to overtime.
IU did not make a field goal for the final 5:32 in regulation, and its only made basket in overtime came with 30 seconds to go.
Despite the issues, IU head coach Darian DeVries was happy with the fight his team showed.
“We get a double-digit lead there late, we don’t need to go to overtime,” DeVries said. “But again, they found a way. They didn’t give into it. They kept fighting. They kept in the huddle encouraging one another, and I think that’s a sign of a veteran team. They didn’t panic inside the huddle. They just knew you’ve just got to make that next play, and they were able to do that.”
