INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Thousands of Hoosier students will have access to summer instruction in reading and math through Indiana’s Summer Learning Labs, a free five-week program for students entering grades one through nine.

SLL provides daily reading and math lessons from licensed teachers, along with enrichment activities tailored to each location. Nearly 12,000 students in grades are expected to participate in 2026.

“The summer months provide an important opportunity to continue that momentum, giving students the time and support necessary to make meaningful progress and return to school ready to learn in the fall,” Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner said in a statement.

According to the Indiana Department of Education, data show students who attended Summer Learning Labs in 2025 posted double-digit percentage point proficiency gains in both reading and math.

The Summer Learning Labs launched in Indianapolis in 2021 as a partnership between The Mind Trust and United Way of Central Indiana to accelerate learning after the COVID-19 pandemic. After early results showed statistically significant academic growth, IDOE partnered with The Mind Trust to scale the Indy Summer Learning Labs model to other regions through the Expanding What Works grant.
