Hoosier farmers are struggling, and lawmakers are split on how to help

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Lawmakers are considering legislation to help U.S. farmers facing climbing costs in agriculture. But there’s no clear path for relief. 

The war in Iran has fueled record-high diesel prices in Indiana and restricted fertilizer supply. About a third of the world’s fertilizer supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the International Food Policy Research Institute.

“I think it’s probably the toughest it’s ever been,” White County farmer Aleta Clark told News 8

While Congress is considering a pair of bills that could provide support to American farmers, neither have a clear path to become law. 

The U.S. House voted 218-203 to pass a bill allowing the year-round sale of E15, a fuel blend containing 15% ethanol. Environmental regulations to reduce smog currently restrict the sale of E15 in the Summer season.
