Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after fatal crash in University City

A pedestrian in freeway lanes in University City died after being struck by a pickup truck early Tuesday, and the 58-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The pedestrian was struck by a Ford Ranger around 1:40 a.m. on westbound state Route 52 near Regents Road, Officer Kimberly Gonzalez said Friday.

The pedestrian died before he could be taken to a hospital, Gonzalez said. His name was not released pending notification of his family.

The driver of the pickup stayed at the scene and spoke with investigators. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and DUI causing injury.
