Colts place transition tag on Daniel Jones

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Colts are placing the transition tag on Daniel Jones, the team announced.

With the transition tag, Jones is free to negotiate with other teams. However, if Jones signs an offer with another team, the Colts would have five days to match the offer and retain Jones.

The transition tag is cheaper than the franchise tag, with the Colts saving more than $6 million. The transition tag is $37.8 million for Jones.

If Jones has not signed an offer sheet with another team by July 22, he can only negotiate a contract with the Colts.

Jones threw for 3,101 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 2025. He completed 68% of his passes, the highest mark of his career. Jones also added five rushing touchdowns. The Colts were 8-5 in games that he started.

With Jones receiving the transition tag, the Colts cannot place a tag on wide receiver Alec Pierce.
