The City of Chula Vista marked a new chapter in its efforts to combat food insecurity, holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday at the Civic Center Chula Vista Public Library to launch South Bay’s first city-operated food pantry.

The pantry, a partnership between the city and Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego, will offer a rotating selection of pantry staples and essential food items to community members. It opens to the public Wednesday, March 4, and will operate Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 7 p.m. at the library’s Civic Center branch, 365 F St.

“I think everybody has a need for food, and we’re here to make that as accessible as possible without any judgment and with minimal barriers,” said Alyson Hamlin, senior librarian at the Civic Center Library.
