A 35-year-old man who died shortly after he was found slumped over in his San Diego Central Jail cell last week was identified Monday.
Irving Pineda died after he was found in medical distress by jail staff who were distributing medication early Wednesday morning, sheriff’s Lt. Juan Marquez said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died about four hours later.
Pineda had been in custody for six days and had been arrested on suspicion of grand theft and for violating a court order, according to investigators.
The Sheriff’s Office said Pineda’s death is being investigated by its homicide division, as are all in-custody deaths. It is also being reviewed by the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board, the county’s civilian oversight body.
The county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
